Hope or Despair; Life or Death

“Then, when Judas, his betrayer, saw that he was condemned, he had second thoughts and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders saying, ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.’ But they said, ‘What is that to us? Look to yourself.’”

(Matthew 27:3-4)

 

In the flow of things, this is a little out of order (at least with Matthew’s chronology). The main thing to remember, in this case, is that this event is essentially taking place at the same time as some of the mob demands before Pilate — behind the scenes. Moving it down into this position in the harmonized account, allows for the full story around Pilate to be told and then the comments around Judas’ betrayal.

A contrast takes place here, though, that is very important to note. Here, Judas is called, “the betrayer,” a name that will stick with Judas through the rest of history. The term that is used is paradi/dwmi (paradidomi), which literally means “one who delivers.” In this case, context has clarified how the delivery takes place, for Judas has delivered Jesus into the hands of the wicked. The contrast that takes place, though, is that you have two deliverers at work in this passage — Judas the betrayer, the one who delivers Jesus into the hands of the wicked, and Jesus the deliverer of the elect of God. One a worker of unrighteousness the other the Lord of all righteousness. Indeed, what a sad contrast this is.

We are told that Judas had second thoughts. The term used here is metame/lomai (metamelomai) and it conveys the sense of being sorry for an action, regretting one’s decision, and wishing that it could be undone. We should not see this as repentance, though. Typically the word translated as “repent” is metanoe/w (metanoeo), and refers to a total change in one’s worldview or perspective. Judas felt bad because he realized his betrayal was that of condemning an innocent man to death, but his hard heart did not change (to be evidenced by his suicide to follow). Nevertheless, there is honest grief that is exhibited here.

Judas seeks to undo his actions rather than asking Christ for forgiveness, thinking that if he returns the blood money he won’t be as culpable. Again, this is a sign of a heart that is not regenerate, simply regrets his actions and fears his future condemnation. The priests are unable to accept blood money, but we are getting ahead of ourselves. Notice, though, their response to Judas. “It’s your problem, not ours” is essentially what they tell him. They have what they want and nothing can undo the events that will soon transpire.

The final phrase is translated in a variety of ways, often implying that Judas is responsible for fixing his own mess — “don’t involve us” is implied. I would suggest that is partially true, but misses the force of this statement. They say, “look to yourself” or even “look on yourself” (the verb there is a “middle” form, implying an action that one is doing upon or to oneself). Here’s the thing. Judas is sorry for his actions and is going to the priests. It was the priests whose role was to be the intercessor between God and man for sins. They are basically saying to him that there is nothing they can do, he needs to make atonement by his own works — they demonstrate their own impotence as priests do do what they have been called to do. Judas will not run to Christ, he recognizes he stands condemned, what will be left to do but to take his own life — indeed he will look to himself.

Oh, beloved, the despair that comes from looking upon oneself for your own deliverance. It simply cannot be done. No matter how high and lofty the Christ-less ideals of the unbeliever may sound to our ears, they cannot hope to live them out and will end up in despair…like Judas. There is hope in one name for in only one name is there forgiveness for sins and a promise of deliverance from this body of death. And that name is the name of Jesus Christ! Run to him! Cling to him! And call the world to do the same! For in Him and in Him alone there is life and hope and peace and joy! Oh the sorrows we inflict upon ourselves when we seek to take matters into our own hands; what life there is in the hands of Christ. Choose this day, loved ones, whom you will serve — and do it! Live out your faith in everything you say and do, growing in faith and grace yourself and pointing others to the only hope for this life and for the next. Amen.

Honesty, Humility, and Grace

“And he went out and wept bitterly.”

(Luke 22:62)

 

Though it has already been mentioned, Peter’s reaction to his sin is worth dwelling on for a moment longer. How great the contrast is between Peter and Judas. Both committed great sins against their master and both grieved deeply as a result of their sins. Yet, there was a profound difference — Judas gave up hope, which led to his own suicide. Though Peter was captured within the miry bog of despair, it seems that he never gave up hope and he never totally separated himself from the other disciples — those who would show him forgiveness.

How often, when people fall into very deep sin, one of three things happen. First, they seek to hide their sin, neglecting that no one can hide from the eyes of God. Second, they isolate themselves from the body of believers wherein healing can take place. Or third, and worst of all, the body of believers shuns the repentant brother and refuses to forgive them of the sin they committed.

Yet, what we find in Peter’s experience is wholly different and a good testimony of how repentance ought to be approached in the life of the believer and the church. Peter grieved his sin and grieved deeply. He had betrayed his Lord. Yet, he did not hide his sin — indeed, it became part of the testimony of God’s forgiveness within the Gospel accounts. Secondly, he did not flee from the presence of the other disciples — the church. Surely there must have been some frustration at Peter’s confession, but then again, they had fled as well so also stood guilty of abandoning their Lord. Perhaps the only one with a right to condemn would have been John, who did not flee nor deny, but we never see such taking place. And clearly, as we move into the book of Acts, this group of men and women never held Peter’s denial against him. It never got brought up again in a way that would compromise the message of the Gospel of Reconciliation. What a wonderful model for us as the church. It would require honesty, humility, and grace, but is that not what we have also received from Christ himself?

 

Faithfulness that Convicts (Luke 22:39; John 18:2)

“And coming out, he went, as was habit, to the Mount of Olives and the disciples also followed him there.”

(Luke 22:39)

“And Judas, the one delivering him over, knew the place, because Jesus would often be gathered together with his disciples there.”

(John 18:2)

“As was his habit.” What a wonderful picture of the prayer life of our Lord. Jesus would often excuse himself to a quiet and secluded place, taking the twelve with him, and pray.  As we mentioned before, the disciples knew about this place, not because it was some sort of privileged hideaway like the glade in Robin Hood’s Sherwood Forest, but because it was Jesus’ habit to come here. Yet, by the same token, it is this habit that informed Judas where Jesus would be so that the arrest could be made later in the night.

Of course, all of the events of the night are part of the Father’s plan from before the beginning of time, but I wonder, sometimes, on a more human level, as to whether our habits would be such that they would betray us in this way. Certainly, I suppose, we all have bad habits that our enemies might shame us for—and shame us rightly, but what about righteous habits? Daniel’s enemies knew of his habit of prayer and that habit was so regular and accessible that they were able to easily arrest him when he would not bow and pray to Darius (Daniel 6:10-11). Paul’s enemies knew that he was in the Temple purifying himself (Acts 21:26-30), remembering just how large the temple was and just how many people streamed in and out on a daily basis (it would be like trying to monitor who was going in and out of New York’s Grand Central Station). And, of course, Jesus’ enemies always knew where to find him when he healed on the Sabbath day or allowed his disciples to pick and eat a handful of grain when walking on the Sabbath (Mark 2:23-24).

So, I wonder whether our prayer life might get us in trouble were the laws different in America? If it were illegal to be a Christian, would anyone know to arrest us? If it were illegal to pray during daylight hours, would our enemies know when to burst into our homes as they did with Daniel? If it were illegal to carry a Bible anywhere but to church, would we stand guilty or would anyone notice? Our Lord and the saints of old were faithful to a point that such faithfulness could get them in trouble. Would that our faithfulness would also get us into trouble as well! Sadly, I think that all too often, we rob ourselves of the blessing of persecution by being way too cautious in our faith. It would have been easy, in human terms, to have said to his disciples, “we need to find a different place to pray tonight because Judas knows that he can find us here.” Yet, Jesus’ plan was to allow this arrest to take place and thus faithfully submitted to his Father’s will. May we be found guilty of the same faithfulness.

Blessed are you when they reproach you, persecute you, and say evil and lies of you because of me. Rejoice and Exalt!  For your reward is great in heaven. For thus they persecuted the prophets who came before you.
